The first archaeological exploration took place in the mid-18th century.

The city, was divided by a regular grid of streets intersecting at right angles. The houses were mainly built on two storeys, with a garden or courtyard and decorated with architectural coatings and paints of high value. The ‘foro’, a wide rectangular square, represented the core of religious and political life, there stood the town’s main public buildings.

There were two theaters: the Teatro Piccolo, a building that dates back to 75-80 BC that was destined for musical auditions and performances of mimes; and the Great Theatre, with a capacity of 5,000 spectators, which dates back to the Hellenistic age (150-200 BC).

Among many remarkable beauties, the House of the Vettii family is one of the most interesting examples of wealthy homes, meanwhile the Villa dei Misteri is perhaps the most important building in Pompeii. Numerous other buildings deserve particular attention.

The magnate German Krupp in 1900, finances the construction of a pedestrian street that linked to the Quisisana, where he resided, at Marina Piccola.

Created wonderfully by the engineer Emilio Mayer, it has been called “the most beautiful Street in the world” for its remarkable adhesion to the rock which is used and for the proper use of local building materials.

Villa Jovis, the largest imperial villa of Tiberius, built in the early 1st century. ad, was discovered in the 18th century by Charles of Bourbon. The first exploration occurred in 1827; the excavation was then expanded in 1932-35 by A. Maiuri who excavated much of the original complex, covering an area of 7000 sq.m.; the gardens of the villa were to cover, originally, the entire Hill.

Villa San Michele was built by Swedish physician and writer Axel Munthe, author of the famous novel “the story of San Michele”. The villa was built by transforming a simple cottage and an ancient chapel dedicated to Saint Michael  on the ruins of the Augustan era, finely decorated that testify the presence of a palatial residence.

The Grotta Azzurra, the existence of the cave is revealed in August 1826 by the German writer Augustus Kopish who described, for the first time, the extraordinary beauty.

Since then, the Grotta Azzurra represents the emblem of the island of Capri; but the charm of this place has much more remote sources; the cave was already known in Roman times as evidenced by the ancient statues found on the bottom.

Sunlight enters from a cavity underwater and through seawater, it creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern.

In 1266, with the Angevins, Naples became capital; then, from 1441 with the Aragonese, whose Palace was the Nuovo Castle in Naples, the period of Renaissance began. In 1503 the Kingdom of Naples fell into the hands of Spanish power.

The city was extended with a typical dense grid of narrow streets, leading towards the hills. Returned as capital in 1734 under the Bourbons reign and remained so, except for the brief Napoleonic era (1806-1815), until 1860 when the Italy became a Union.

In addition to the 13th and 14th centuries, of considerable artistic production were also the Baroque centuries (17th – 18th century) the most fruitful of the Neapolitan art in architecture, paintings and even music reached an original and lively expression.
